October 3 (SeeNews) - Bulgaria's sole nuclear power plant Kozloduy said on Monday it generated a better-than-expected 12.424 million megawatthours (MWh) of electricity in the first nine months of 2011, up by 7.38% on the year.
The planned target for the nine-month period of 11.554 million MWh was reached on September 9 and a surplus 870,706 MWh were generated in the remainder of the month, the power plant said in a statement.
The plant's unit 5 currently operates at full capacity, while the its unit 6 is undergoing planned annual maintenance which started on September 24.
Kozloduy remained with just two operational reactors of 1,000 MW each after the government closed down four units of 440 MW each to address nuclear safety concerns of the European Union prior to the country's accession to the bloc. Bulgaria joined the EU in 2007.
