March 11 (SeeNews) - Serbia will hold a rerun of Belgrade's municipal election on June 2 amid claims of voting irregularities, president Aleksandar Vucic said on Sunday.
The right-wing Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) won the December 17 election. However, the main opposition coalition, Serbia Against Violence, has insisted that the local and parliamentary votes, held simultaneously, were tainted by widespread irregularities, prompting a series of mass protests in Belgrade.
The election was particularly intense in Belgrade, where SNS secured 49 out of the 110 seats in the Belgrade municipal council.
Last week, Belgrade mayor Aleksandar Sapic said there would be a rerun of the Belgrade elections, citing April 28 as a possible date.
Following the December vote, the European Union said Serbia's electoral process requires tangible improvement, after a team of international observers pointed to a series of irregularities, such as "vote buying" and "ballot box stuffing”.
