BELGRADE (Serbia), December 2 (SeeNews) – Global animal health company Alltech said it has opened a effluent treatment plant for its yeast production facility in Serbia which will convert biological waste into biogas to generate electricity and heat.

Alltech Opens Effluent Treatment Plant with Cogeneration Unit for its Yeast Facility in Serbia

The treatment facility, which combines anaerobic and aerobic treatment plants, will use 37% of the plant’s natural gas requirements and contribute 34% of its electrical capacity, Alltech said in a statement late on Tuesday. It did not disclose the size of the investment.

The effluent treatment plant will use hot water generated from the cogeneration plant for various processes in the facility and to heat the anaerobic reactor, the statement said. The plant was built using incentives from the Serbian government aimed at encouraging investment in renewable energy sources.

The yeast production facility is located in Senta, in northern Serbia. It was opened in 1981 and has the capacity to produce over 8,000 tonnes of yeast a year. It employs over 240 staff in the region and is the manufacturing facility for the company’s proprietary yeast products. U.S.-headquartered Alltech also supplies speciality food grade yeast extracts for Advanced Yeast Technologies, a newly formed joint venture with global trading company Mitsui and Japanese brewer Asahi Brewers.
