Albtelecom’s international Internet connectivity increased up to 7.0 Gbps in 2010 and then to 20 Gbps in 2012 and the company is planning another upgrade in January 2013 to 30 Gbps, deputy director general and chief compliance officer of Albtelecom and Eagle Mobile llir Zela was quoted as saying on Albtelecom’s website on Wednesday.
“Our fiber-optic network is expanding further. We are now investing in fiber not only as part of our backbone network but as part of the access network as well,” Zela said. “Our fiber to the neighborhood concept can easily be extended to fiber to the building and fiber to the home. All depends on the bandwidth needs of our customers.”
The Cetel consortium, majority-owned by Turkish energy-to-finance holding Calik, acquired a 76% stake in Albtelecom in 2007. The balance is held by the Albanian state and other shareholders.
Two other local wireless carriers, Albanian Mobile Communications and Vodafone, have already launched 3G services in the country of 2.8 million.
