September 23 (SeeNews) - Albania will call an international tender in early October to import an additional 200 gigawatthours (GWh) of electricity to meet increasing domestic demand until the end of the year, local TV broadcaster Top Channel reported on Tuesday.

The tender is expected to be called in the second week of October, Top Channel quoted unnamed sources at Albania’s state-owned power distributor OSSH as saying.

In June the country’s power utility KESH contracted seven firms to supply a combined 883 GWh of imported electricity in the second half of the year. State-owned KESH paid some 70 million euro ($102 million) on this amount of electricity.

The need for an additional tender reflects the rising energy demand in Albania and KESH's inadequate energy imports estimates, Top Channel said.

In late August Raiffeisen Albania lent 40 million euro to KESH for power imports.

More than 95% of Albania’s electricity output is generated by hydropower plants, which are outdated and unable to meet rising domestic demand.
