May 31 (SeeNews) - Albanian state-owned air traffic management company Albcontrol said on Friday it has opened a tender for a contract to enhance flight information infrastructure at the inactive airport of Kukes.

Albania seeks to improve Kukes airport's flight info infrastructure

Prospective bidders are required to supply and install all equipment needed for the flight information service within a year, under a contract valued at 33.3 million leks ($359,199/330,900 euro), Albcontrol said in a tender notice.

Flight information typically involves radar systems, communication devices, computers, software, and other tools essential for monitoring and managing air traffic.

The airport in Kukes, in notheastern Albania, was closed last year following the withdrawal of Hungarian low-cost carrier Wizz Air just a year after starting operations there. This left the airport with only a few flights operated by Turkish-Albanian company Air Albania, which subsequently also suspended operations.

Kukes International Airport Zayed was built with financial investment from United Arab Emirates' company Emaar Properties and operated its first flight in April 2021. It was established with the aim to serve as an alternative airport to Albania’s main airport in Tirana, operating mainly low-cost flights.
