The half-year output of the 156-MW wind park, operated by AES Geo Energy, was enough to meet the needs of 116,000 households, AES Bulgaria said in a recent statement. This has helped households in Bulgaria's municipality of Varna use only renewable power in the January-June period, the company noted.

St Nikola produced 15,500 MWh of electricity in July, AES said in a social media post earlier this week.

The wind farm, located near the town of Kavarna on the northern Black Sea coast, consists of 52 turbines of 3 MW each. It was constructed in 2009 and was commissioned a year later.

The total investment in the project was some 270 million euro ($272.1 million), of which 198 million euro was provided by a bank consortium comprising the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the International Financial Corporation (IFC) and UniCredit Market & Investment Banking.

AES Geo Energy is a joint venture of New York-listed power corporation AES, which holds a majority stake through AES Bulgaria, and the German Geo Power company.

AES also operates the 600-MW coal-fired power plant AES Galabovo, located in southern Bulgaria.
