March 27 (SeeNews) - A third person has died of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) in Croatia, with the number of infected jumping to 551 as of Friday morning, from 481 a day earlier, the Croatian Institute of Public Health, HZJZ, said.

At the same time, the number of those who have recovered from the disease has increased to 37 from 22, HZJZ said in a statement posted on the government-run website created to follow the virus spread in the country.

The count is based on the test results of 4,482 people.

The average age of the infected people is 48.2 years, with a quarter of all aged 60 years and more. Out of the total, 54% are male.

Earlier this week, the Croatian government barred people from leaving their place of permanent residence, in an attempt to slow down the further spread of the virus.

Prior to that, over the weekend, the working hours of shops in Croatia were reduced. Now, shops are open from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. Public transport was halted for 30 days, parks and outdoor sports centres were closed down and new rules were introduced for marriages and funerals.

The latest restrictions came after last week Croatia banned public and religious gatherings and sports events for 30 days, closed its borders and shut down all restaurants and non-essential shops.

The first person to test positive for COVID-19 in Croatia was registered on February 25.
