January 17 (SeeNews) - Romanian railway operator CFR said on Tuesday that it signed 11 contracts worth a total of 221 million lei ($48 million/45 million euro) with Turkish company Yapı Merkezi for upgrades on the railway connecting Bucharest to Craiova.
Following rehabilitation works, the 24 km railway section will allow for train speeds of up to 120 km/h, CFR said in a press release.
Works under each of the 11 Quick Wins contracts should be completed within 24 months. Financing is secured through non-refundable funds under Romania’s National Plan for Recovery and Resilience, PNRR.
Yapı Merkezi Construction and Industry has so far developed buildings, heavy construction and railway projects both in Turkey and abroad, especially in the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Algeria, Morocco and Ethiopia, according to its website.
Earlier this month, CFR announced that local construction company Ness Proiect Europe has won a public tender valued at 163.6 million lei for the rehabilitation of the superstructure of the Tecuci-Iasi railway section that will ensure higher train speed.
