March 16 (SeeNews) - Confirmed cases of the coronavirus infection in Slovenia have jumped to 253 by 2pm local time on Monday, from Sunday's 219, the government said.

The result comes after testing a total of 6,712 people, the government said in a statement.

State news agency STA reported that Slovenia has registered its first coronavirus fatality over the weekend - a person of the high-risk group of people above 65 years of age.

On Thursday, Slovenia declared a state of emergency because of the coronavirus spread in the country upon recommendation of the National Institute of Public Health. The measure puts the country's Civil Protection Service in charge of coordinating the measures to combat the spread of the virus.

In addition, hospitals started admitting only patients with clinical symptoms requiring hospital treatment, while patients with mild clinical symptoms will have to stay at home. Public transport has been halted, schools and kindergartens have been closed, restrictions have been imposed on border crossings and on public gatherings.

The first confirmed coronavirus case in Slovenia was reported on March 4.
