February 23 (SeeNews) - Slovenia's parliament has given the green light for the deployment of army units at the Croatian Schengen border to support the country's police forces in controlling the migrant flow.
A total of 69 members of the 90-seat parliament voted in favour of the act, while five voted against it late on Monday, data from the assembly's website shows.
The army will be assigned to the border for three months, with an option for extending the mandate if the migrant crisis draws out. Under the new law, soldiers will be allowed to detain migrants before handing them over to the police.
Slovenia's move follows an announcement by its northern neighbour, Austria, that it will limit the inflow of migrants into the country.
Elsewhere in Southeast Europe, last week the Bulgarian parliament allowed in principle the army to participate in border protection. The law amendments must be passed at a second reading before entering into force.
