January 6 (SeeNews) - The governments of Romania and Moldova have agreed to build pipelines under the border river Prut to deliver fresh water from the eastern Romanian county of Iasi to Moldovan districts of Nisporeni, Ungheni, Glodeni and Falesti, the environment ministry in Bucharest said.
"As we have discussed during the meeting in December with Moldovan deputy prime minister Andrei Spanu, the physical connection between the two countries is part of our common priorities alongside other water supply, sewerage or energy efficiency local infrastructure projects which have a major impact on the quality of life of citizens in the Moldova," Romanian environment minister Tanczos Barna said in a press release on Wednesday.
Investments in the project will be financed from the budget of Iasi regional operator for water services and sewerage S.C. Apavital.
The first stage provides for the construction of an underground pipeline beneath the Prut river, which will supply fresh water to over 30,000 people in 13 localities in the Ungheni and Nisporeni districts.
According to the ministry, the new water pipelines will supply fresh drinking water to over 250,000 people living in Glodeni, Nisporeni, Ungheni and Falesti.
