September 10 (SeeNews) - Croatia's Adriatic port of Baska is going to launch a 41.2 million kuna ($6.2 million/5.6 million euro) overhaul project supported by European Union cohesion funds, the transport ministry said.
The contract for the financing of the project was signed on Monday, with the EU providing 33.8 million kuna towards the total cost and the transport ministry providing the remainder, the ministry said in a statement after the signing ceremony.
The project will be managed by the port authority of the Krk county where Baska is located.
The first phase of the project includes building a 50.55 metres extension of the port's Vela breakwater structure, while works in the second stage will extend the secondary Mala River breakwater by 105 metres.
Once the project is completed, the port will be able to accommodate passenger ships throughout the year, reducing the current congestion level and raising the quality of port services for all passengers including those with disabilities.
The project is part of a wider initiative of the government in Zagreb and the EU, which has earmarked more than 709 million kuna for improving Croatia's port infrastructure, the ministry said.
