March 7 (SeeNews) - Romanian railway operator CFR said it is investing 1.2 billion lei ($262.5 million/241.3 million euro) in the modernisation of two railway routes connecting Bucharest to the southwestern city Craiova .
The project for upgrade works on 348 km of railroad sections is financed through non-refundable funds from Romania's National Recovery and Resilience Plan, CFR said in a press release on Wednesday.
The project is split across 44 contracts that were signed by CFR's regional branches in Bucharest and Craiova between December 2022 and December 2023. As many as 41 of the contracts are to be completed between December 2024 and February 2025, while the remaining have to be concluded in December 2026, as per the CFR's statement.
Upon completion of the modernisation works, the 209 km long Bucharest -Videle - Craiova route will enable train speed of up to 120 km/h, for a trip duration of 2 hours and 19 minutes, down from the current 3 hours and 31 minutes, and a trip duration of 3 hours and 3 minutes for the 250 km long Bucharest - Pitesti - Craiova route, down from 4 hours and 56 minutes now.
