December 15 (SeeNews) - The Bulgarian caretaker government said that it has approved additional financing of up to 30 million levs ($16.3 million/15.3 million euro) to facilitate the construction of part of the third section of Line 3 of Sofia metro system.
The fresh funds, to be allocated to Sofia municipal budget, can also be used for the technical design, supply, installation and commissioning of traffic control and management systems, communication systems and platform barrier doors, the government said in a press release on Wednesday.
The 6-km section will have 6 new stations and will also serve Sofia Tech Park.
In March, Metropoliten, the municipally-owned operator of Sofia metro, broke ground for the construction of a 217 million levs section of Line 3. Two parts of the 12-km line, with 12 stations, have already been completed and are in operation, using Siemens-made traffic control and safety systems.
The extension of Sofia's metro network by a 5.67-km new section between Tsarigradsko Shose boulevard and Slatina district, in the eastern part of Sofia, began in 2021. The tender launched by Metropoliten is worth an overall 530 million levs.
With the completion of the next two lots by 2025, the Sofia metro system will expand from 52 km of tracks and 47 stations to 61 km of tracks and 56 stations.
