January 29 (SeeNews) - Swedish-Swiss automation company ABB said it has secured an order to upgrade nineteen 5100-kilowatt (kW) locomotives operated by CFR Calatori, Romania’s state-owned railway passenger transport company.
The project is supported by Romania’s National Recovery and Resilience Plan, funded by the European Union, ABB said in a press release on January 22.
Each of the locomotives will be retrofitted with a traction transformer, two CC 1500 MS traction converters and six AMX 500 traction motors by ABB.
ABB will supply the traction equipment, comprising transformers, converters and electric motors, in partnership with Reloc, a local contractor specialised in the overhauling and modernisation of locomotives operating in Romania and Southeast Europe.
Following the upgrade, the passenger trains will be able to run at a top speed of 160 km/h versus the current 120 km/h .
