February 17 (SeeNews) - Serbia will hold early general elections on April 3, together with local elections, senior state officials said.
Vucic said he signed a decree setting the date for the vote for members of parliament, according to a video file posted on the YouTube channel of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) on Tuesday.
Earlier in the day, parliament speaker Ivica Dacic signed a decree for the holding of local elections on April 3, the parliament announced in a press release.
"I invite Serbian people to take part in both elections and show our country's democratic capacity," Vucic said.
A coalition led by populist conservative SNS party won 188 of 250 seats in Serbia's parliament in the regular general election held on June 21, 2020. Major opposition parties boycotted the vote, citing lack of conditions for their free and fair elections. After the elections, Vucic said that the new government will be in power for less than two years, or approximately half of a regular term.
