December 28 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu closed a tad stronger against the euro on Monday, dealers said.
The leu ended at 4.2020/2050 per euro versus 4.2075/2150 per euro on Thursday, the last working day for the Romanian market before Christmas.
On Monday, the Romanian currency was little influenced by Wednesday's adoption of the country's budget draft for next year by the government. It opened at 4.2090/4.2120 per euro and slightly appreciated later in the session, one dealer told SeeNews.
The adoption of the 2010 budget was one of the conditions set by the International Monetary Fund for the release of the following installments of a 20-billion euro ($28.8 billion) IMF-led bailout package to Romania. The country's parliament is expected to vote in the first half of January on the draft, which envisages consolidated budget deficit equivalent to 5.9% of gross domestic product next year.
Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.1997 lei per euro on Monday, compared to 4.2028 on Thursday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set its reference exchange rate at 2.9175 lei versus Thursday’s 2.9165.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market fell to 3.425 billion lei on Thursday from 3.502 billion lei on Wednesday. The BNR will issue Monday’s turnover figures on Tuesday.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits remained almost unchanged at 11.51%/12.01% on Monday from 11.52%/12.02% on Thursday.
