November 30 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu closed stronger versus the euro on Monday in high trading volumes and increased volatility, dealers said.
The leu ended at 4.2650/2680 per euro, compared to 4.2760/2800 per euro on Friday.
"I think big [euro] sellers were on the market and it was not the central bank. […] The leu appreciated strongly by the end of the trading session and closed at the intraday high of 4.2650 per euro," one dealer told SeeNews.
He added that uncertainty still persists on the market and it was difficult to predict the movements of the leu until the end of the week.
Romania's central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.2738 lei per euro on Monday, compared to 4.2807 on Friday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set its reference exchange rate at 2.8396 lei versus Friday’s 2.8691.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market rose to 2.870 billion lei on Friday from 2.480 billion lei on Thursday. The BNR will issue Monday’s turnover figures on Wednesday. On Tuesday, December 1, Romania will celebrate National Day.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits fell to 8.39%/8.89% on Monday from 8.42%/8.92% on Friday.
