January 31 (SeeNews) - The Romanian Railway Reform Authority (ARF) said it has signed a 3.04 billion lei ($660.6 million/610.4 million euro) contract with Polish rolling stock manufacturer PESA to purchase 62 new regional electric trains.
The trains will be manufactured at PESA's plant in Poland and will be delivered to Romania within 36 months, ARF said in a press release on Tuesday. The contract also includes a 15-year maintenance agreement.
The new trains will be used on ten regional routes across Romania, including Bucharest-Ploiesti-Brasov, Bucharest-Adjud, Iasi-Pascani-Suceava, Arad-Timisoara-Caransebes, Huedin-Cluj-Bistrita, and Constanța-Fetesti. They will be equipped with air conditioning, Wi-Fi, and other amenities to improve passenger comfort.
The project will be financed through non-reimbursable European funds and the state budget.
Earlier this month, ARF said it had awarded French multinational rolling stock manufacturer Alstom a contract valued at 767.5 million lei for the delivery of 16 new electric locomotives.
