January 17 (SeeNews) - Romania's railway reform authority (ARF) said it has awarded French multinational rolling stock manufacturer Alstom a contract valued at 767.5 million lei ($167.6 million/154.2 million euro) for the delivery of 16 new electric locomotives.
The locomotives will be used by railway passenger carrier CFR Calatori to haul up to 16 passenger coaches each, on a network of electrified and partially electrified routes across Romania, ARF said in a press release on Tuesday.
The Alstom locomotives will be capable of operating at speeds of up to 200 km/h and will also benefit from a 20-year maintenance and repair service package, included in the price of the deal.
Alstom has been active in Romania for almost 30 years and is responsible for implementing signaling or electrification solutions on more than 75% of the northern branch of the Rhine-Danube railway corridor in the country.
