February 1 (SeeNews) - North Macedonia's closed last year with public debt equivalent to 57.1% of the projected gross domestic product (GDP), the finance ministry said.
At the end of 2022, public debt was 3.9% lower compared to a year earlier, the finance ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.
"The level of public debt has decreased below the Maastricht criteria of 60% in crisis conditions," finance minister Fatmir Besimi said in the statement.
North Macedonia's public debt totalled 7.7 billion euro ($8.4 billion) at the end of 2022, according to earlier data provided by the finance ministry.
In addition, budget deficit at the end of last year was 1 percentage point lower than planned and 8.7% lower compared with 2021.
North Macedonia posted a budget deficit of 35.5 billion denars in 2022, compared with a deficit of 38.8 billion denars the year before, according to the latest finance ministry data.
