March 23 (SeeNews) - Montenegro has confirmed the first death in the country related to the novel coronavirus disease, while the total number of cases in the country rose to 22 as of Sunday, the health institute said.

"In the laboratories of the health institute, COVID-19 was confirmed in a patient born in 1955 who was hospitalised during the day and unfortunately passed away. The patient had a chronic lung condition," the health institute said in its Twitter profile late on Sunday.

The 65-year-old patient is from Herceg Novi and travelled to Serbia in the first half of March, Montenegrin public broadcaster RTCG quoted on Sunday the director of the health institute, Boban Mugosa, as saying.

Montenegro confirmed the first two cases of the novel coronavirus disease on its territory on March 17. The country has closed its borders for foreign nationals to prevent the spread of the disease on its territory.
