SKOPJE (Macedonia), October 5 (SeeNews) – Macedonia's Transport Ministry said the country has abolished road taxes for foreign haulers in a bid to align local regulations to European Union (EU) legislation.
“The amendments in the Public Roads Act for the removal of road taxes for vehicles registered abroad have entered into force,” the Ministry said in the statement on Friday.
Going forward, all foreign carriers will pay only road tolls, the statement added.
Previously, foreign-registered trucks on a transit route through Macedonia had to pay a road tax in the amount of 50 euro ($73.3) to 70 euro at the country’s borders, Skopje-based broadcaster Sitel (www.sitel.com.mk) said earlier. It added that Macedonia will demand reciprocal measures to be taken by EU member states.
Macedonia was granted an EU candidate status in December 2005, but it is still to get a date to start accession negotiations with the bloc.
