Kaufland Bulgaria, part of German retail chain Kaufland, has invested some 6.8 million levs ($3.68 million/3.48 million euro) to expand its logistics base in the village of Stryama near Plovdiv, a company spokesperson told SeeNews in an emailed statement last Friday.
The investment comprised the construction of 1,147 sq m of space in the frozen foods area, adding 1,100 pallet spaces and increasing the warehouse's total area to over 113,000 sq m, Kaufland Bulgaria said in a separate press release on Friday.
Kaufland's Stryama warehouse, which is the largest logistics centre in the Balkans, has a total capacity of more than 111,000 pallet spaces. The base processes and ships over 1.3 million pallets to all Kaufland hypermarkets across the country annually.
The centre employs 580 people, including quality specialists who audit incoming items daily to ensure they meet the necessary criteria.
Kaufland Bulgaria, which generates an annual turnover of some 1.9 billion levs, has 63 hypermarkets in 35 cities in the country, including 13 sites in Sofia.
