August 21 (SeeNews) - The number of foreign tourists staying in Albania rose by 10% on the year to 522,197 through June, the Tourism Ministry said.
Albania, which borders the Adriatic Sea and the Ionian Sea in the west, attracted most foreign tourists from Macedonia, who accounted for 23% of all foreign visitors in the first half of the year. Second came tourists from Kosovo (17%) and Montenegro was third with 14%.
In June alone a total of 135,740 foreign tourists visited Albania, the ministry said in a statement on its website.
No resorts have been built at the Albanian coasts since the fall of Communism in the country in the 1990s. Tourists are staying in renovated houses and family hotels in the coastal villages.
