BUCHAREST (Romania), January 27 (SeeNews) – European Commissioner for regional policy, Corina Cretu said on Friday that the European Commission (EC) will back ten investment projects in Romania with 800 million euro ($858 million).
The projects are mainly in infrastructure and were launched between 2007 and 2013, due to be finalised by 2020, the Commission said in a press release.
The investments will be directed towards transport, waste management, water supply and disaster prevention projects.
"These projects represent more than just infrastructure investment: if used effectively, they can become catalysts for local, regional and national development. It is therefore even more important that EU funds are used strategically and in line with Romania's investment priorities," Corina Cretu said.
The EU will support Romania in building the belt highway of the central city of Brasov and rehabilitating the railway between Brasov and Simeria, part of pan-European Corridor IV.
Also, Romania will develop with EU funds the waste management systems in the southwestern city of Caras-Severin, Black Sea port city of Constanta, and eastern city of Iasi.
The EC will also allocate funding to projects for the expansion and modernisation of water and wastewater systems in the central county of Covasna, the southern county of Teleorman, Constanta and Ialomita, in southeastern Romania and the central counties of Sibiu and Brasov.
Under the WATMAN project designed to prevent and reduce the destructive consequences of flooding, Romania will get support from the EU in installing monitoring equipment for the water management infrastructure, implementing an alarm system in floodplains, creating a rapid intervention system, modernising the communications systems and integrating the meteorological system with the hydrological and water management systems.
