April 15 (SeeNews) - The Bulgarian government said that it approved an agreement between Bulgaria and Romania to open a border control point between Ruse and Giurgiu on the Danube, which will enable the restart of a ferry connection linking the two cities.
The border checkpoint will service passengers and vehicles using the ferry boat between Bulgaria's Ruse and Romania's Giurgiu, the government's press office said in a statement on Wednesday.
Resuming the ferry link service is seen as a significant step towards alleviating the congestion in the two-way traffic of goods and people between the two countries.
At a meeting in January, the Bulgarian and Romanian governments agreed to restart the ferry service and to explore the construction of a second bridge over the Danube between Ruse and Giurgiu. The ferry should start operating by June, local media reported at the time.
Currently, there are only two bridges - Ruse-Giugiu and Vidin-Calafat - over the river border between Bulgaria and Romania, which is 350 kilometres long.
