As of 2007 the total cultivation area in Bulgaria stood at 3.8 million ha. The main oilbearing crop areas in the country include northeastern, north central and southern Bulgaria. Northeastern Bulgaria accounted for 28% of the total cultivation area in the country in 2005. The sunflower oil extraction plants in Dobrich and Provadia, northeastern Bulgaria and in Shumen, Ruse and Popovo, eastern Bulgaria, processed 40% of the sunseed crops in the same period.
As of 2004 the number of companies, active in the Bulgarian vegetable oil sector, totalled 15. The plants, processing oil-bearing crops were 70 with an annual capacity of 800,000 tonnes to 850,000 tonnes.
