LJUBLJANA (Slovenia), July 13 (SeeNews) – Slovenia’s Sostanj coal-fired power plant TES said on Friday it launched an overhaul of its Unit 5, planning to relaunch it in August.
Unit 5 will be relaunched with 345 MW of installed power, which will be an important acquisition for the power plant and in particular for the local environment, TES said in a statement.
Moreover, Unit 4 was permanently shut down after 46 years of operation on July 6, soon after the first scheduled overhaul of the 600 MW Unit 6 was completed, as it is ecologically and technologically unfit for further use, TES said.
Compared to Unit 4, production of electricity in Unit 5 generates 50% lower concentrations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), 60% lower concentrations of nitrogen oxide (NOx) and issues 80% fewer particles.
The sole owner of the Sostanj Thermal Power Plant is Holding Slovenske Elektrarne.
With an installed power of 779 MW, the Sostanj TPP generates, on average, one-third of the energy in the country, and in periods of crisis, it can cover more than half of the national demand, the company's website reads. The average annual electricity production ranges from 3,500 and 3,800 GWh.
