BELGRADE (Serbia), March 3 (SeeNews) – Serbia's prime minister Aleksandar Vucic formally proposed to president Tomislav Nikolic to dissolve parliament and call early general elections, the government said on Thursday.
"In less than two years, the Serbian government has succeeded in preventing a collapse of public finances, pulling the country out of recession with difficult economic reforms, and opening the first chapters in EU entry talks," Vucic said in his letter to the president, as quoted in a government statement. "This being just the first phase, the government believes a new force of united Serbia with a clear mandate is needed to complete the reforms and bring the country to the entrance door of the European family of peoples," he added.
Local public broadcaster RTS reported that the president will accept the prime minister's proposal by Friday afternoon.
Serbia will most probably hold early general elections on April 24, Vucic said late on Tuesday.
In mid-January Vucic said he will call snap elections in an attempt to unblock reforms and to prepare Serbia for EU membership.
Serbia's coalition government comprises the Serbian Progressive Party, SNS, the left-wing Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) and Socialdemogratic Party of Serbia (SDP Srbije).
