March 4 (SeeNews) - Serbia plans to launch a tender for expansion of the broadband network in the country by the end of this month, prime minister Ana Brnabic has said.
The existing broadband network currently covers 60% of Serbia's territory and the expansion project will increase the coverage by 30 percentage points, Brnabic said in a video file posted on the website of public broadcaster RTS on Tuesday.
The network expansion will provide broadband connection to about 19,000 households in Serbia, Brnabic said during a panel discussion in the framework of the Kopaonik Business Forum.
"We'll have infrastructure fully ready for the digital age," she added.
There were 1,535,000 fixed broadband Internet subscribers in Serbia at the end of 2018, according to World Bank data.
A total of 44.4% of the fixed broadband Internet access subscribers used cable connection at the end of last year, followed by xDSL and wireless connections with 38.3% and 5.8%, respectively, according to data by Serbia's telecommunications regulator.
