June 19 (SeeNews) - A senior official of Serbia's ruling SNS party said on Monday that if parliament fails to back Ana Brnabic, who was nominated as prime minister by president Aleksandar Vucic last week, early general election will be held.
If the nomination of Brnabic does not get more than half of the votes in parliament on Thursday, then snap elections will be called, SNS vice president Marija Obradovic said in a video file posted on the website of news agency Tanjug.
"We will start a debate in the National Assembly on the formation of a government this week. We have to count and see if we have 128 votes in favour," Obradovic said.
The SNS coalition has 131 seats in the Serbian parliament, composed of 250 proportionally elected deputies.
President Vucic on gave a mandate for the formation of a government to Brnabic, the incumbent minister of public administration and local self-government.
Brnabic is not affiliated to any party and is expected to succeed Vucic at the helm of the government, becoming the first female prime minister of Serbia.
