March 22 (SeeNews) - A consortium of Serbian construction companies led by Concord West started 12 million euro ($13.2 million) expansion works of the terminal building of Konstantin Veliki airport in Nis, the infrastructure ministry said.
The expansion will increase the airport's capacity by 1.5 million passengers per year and will allow for the simultaneous boarding of up to six aircraft, the ministry said in a statement on Monday.
Nis airport served 146,296 passengers in 2021, 5% less than in 2020 and 65% fewer compared to the pre-pandemic 2019.
After the expansion, passengers will have access to over 700 sq m of facilities and five gates, the ministry added.
"The construction will mean more routes, more flights, more passengers, faster procedures, and overall convenience for the travelers," the statement quoted the mayor of Nis, Dragana Sotirovski, as saying.
The project is expected to be completed within two years.
