April 9 (SeeNews) - Serbia's government has introduced a round-the-clock curfew for weekends for all citizens, aiming to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), prime minister Ana Brnabic said.
As of April 10, a curfew will be in force from 5 pm on Fridays to 5 am on Mondays, as the most critical period for the COVID-19 expansion is during weekends, Brnabic said in a statement on Wednesday.
Citizens respect the calls for self-isolation and reduction of social contacts the least over the weekends and this leads to a jump in the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases five to six days later, Brnabic said.
Last month, the government introduced a night curfew for all citizens from 8 pm to 5 am. The curfew was later extended to the period from 5 pm to 5 am. The country closed its borders on March 15, shortly after it declared a state of emergency.
Serbia has so far confirmed 2,666 cases of COVID-19 and 65 deaths related to the virus.
