December 15 (SeeNews) - Serbia began the construction of a 22-kolometre bypass road around the southern city of Kragujevac, president Aleksander Vucic said.
“This bypass will be of great importance for the development of Kragujevac and something that will give this city a chance to organise the city centre and become industrially stronger,” Vucic said during the groundbreaking ceremony, according to a press release issued by his office on Thursday.
Once complete, the bypass will solve issues such as air pollution and reduce traffic, added Vucic.
The bypass will be connected to the European transport Corridor XI on Serbia's territory via the Cacak-Kraljevo section of the Morava Corridor.
In July, Serbia signed a contract worth 265 million euro ($290.6 million) with state-run road operator Putevi Srbije and Srbija Autoput for the design and construction of the bypass.
