July 12 (SeeNews) - Romania's energy output fell by 0.3% year-on-year in the first five months of 2018, the statistical office, INS, said on Thursday.
Romania's January-May energy production totalled 8.78 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE), INS said in a statement. Energy imports amounted to 5.52 million TOE, up 11% on the year.
Romania's electricity output and imports totalled 29 TWh in the first five months of 2018, down by 0.2% on the year.
In January-May, thermal power plants generated some 11 TWh of electricity, down by 7.8% on the year, while the output of hydro power plants rose by 21.4% to 8.22 TWh.
The production of the country's sole nuclear power plant fell by 1.5% on the year to some 4.49 TWh in the review period.
Wind farms generated 3.27 TWh, down by 3.8%, and solar plants produced 0.69 TWh, 6.2% lower on the year, in the first five months of 2018.
Final electricity consumption rose by an annual 2.7% to 14.68 TWh during the period under review.
Romania’s electricity exports rose by 2.6% year-on-year to 2.35 TWh through May.
The country produced 1.39 million TOE of crude oil, down 2.9% on the year, and 1.739 million TOE of coal, up 16.5%, in the first five months of 2018. Natural gas production rose 1.6% year-on-year, reaching 3.49 million TOE.
In 2017, Romania's energy production rose by 4% to 21.30 million TOE.
A TOE is the rounded-off amount of energy that would be produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.
