August 28 (SeeNews) - Romanian state-owned electricity and heat producer Complexul Energetic Hunedoara (CEH) has invested 65.3 mln euro ($76 million) in a desulphurization system at its Paroseni power plant, the energy ministry said.
Financed through credits granted by the European Investment Bank (EIB), the Romanian Commercial Bank (BCR) and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the installation will eliminate 94% of the plant's sulfur dioxide emissions, the energy ministry said in a press release on Monday.
"This investment is of double importance. On the one hand, the Paroseni thermal power plant will be supplied with coal from the Jiu Valley, and on the other hand, any step taken towards meeting the environmental requirements of coal-fired power plants in Romania will help us achieve a more diverse energy mix in the future," the ministry added.
CEH, founded in 2012 through the merger of Termoelectrica and Electrocentrale Deva, is the only heating utility serving Deva county and the Valea Jiului area, which have a total population of 50,000 people.
