August 21 (SeeNews) - The Romanian leu firmed against the euro on Friday amid calm trading and moderate volumes, dealers said.
The leu ended at 4.2190/2240 per euro on Friday, compared to 4.2350/2400 per euro on Thursday.
The leu and the other currencies of emerging markets in the region were boosted by better-than-expected macroeconomic data in the eurozone, a dealer told SeeNews.
The eurozone's purchasing managers' index rose to a higher-than-expected 50 points in August from 47 points in July, international news organisations reported.
The Romanian central bank, BNR, set its reference exchange rate at 4.2298 per euro on Friday, compared to 4.2310 per euro on Thursday. For the U.S. dollar, the BNR set the reference exchange rate at 2.9571 versus Thursday’s 2.9747.
Turnover on the interbank leu deposit market fell to some 3.559 billion lei on Thursday from 3.745 billion lei on Wednesday. The BNR will issue Friday’s figures on Monday.
Interest rates on overnight leu deposits fell to 5.04%/5.54% on Friday from 8.52%/9.02% on Thursday.
