BUCHAREST (Romania), May 24 (SeeNews) - Romania's capital Bucharest will benefit from 233 million euro ($259.4 million) of EU funding for the purchase of 100 electric buses and 80 trams, the regional development ministry said.
The city council and the ministry signed 11 financing contracts aiming to modernize public transport in Bucharest and improve passenger transport conditions, the regional development ministry said in a press release on Thursday.
"I am glad we managed to sign these contracts, because public transport is a real problem and must be tackled very seriously, especially in the capital, where there are a lot of cars and the pollution is high," deputy prime minister and regional development minister Vasile-Daniel Suciu said. "After implementing these projects, Bucharest will benefit from modern public transport aligned with European standards."
Project funding will be supported from Priority Axis 3 'Supporting the transition to low-carbon economy' of the 2014-2020 Operational Programme Regional Development.
