May 5 (SeeNews) - Romania's agriculture ministry said on Tuesday that it has received the European Commission's approval to support local farmers most affected by the coronavirus pandemic with up to 80 million euro ($87.5 million) of unused EU funds.
Romania has received the Commission's approval to allocate for the purpose up to 1% of EU funds intended for rural investments but not used yet, a percentage which translates into 80 million euro, agriculture minister Adrian Oros said during a news conference streamed on the social media page of the ministry.

Romania sought the permission of the European Commission to spend the unused funds in order to support farmers at the end of March.
"The beneficiaries will be the farmers most affected by this crisis. We will work together to define eligibility conditions and the selection criteria so that they are objective and non-discriminatory," Oros added.
The support will be granted in the form of lump sums which will not exceed 5,000 euro per farmer and 50,000 euro for facilities for processing of agricultural produce.
