March 21 (SeeNews) - Romanian foreign affairs minister Bogdan Aurescu said on Monday Romania is ready to build on its territory a gas storage capacity or host gas for Moldova in order to help it reduce its dependence of Russian gas.
"We are also available to host, in our storage capacities, gas from Moldova and to build, in the medium term, a gas storage capacity of Moldova on the territory of Romania," foreign affairs minister Bogdan Aurescu said during a live-streamed press briefing.
Romania must help Moldova find alternative sources of energy, he stressed.
Moldova has no gas deposits of its own and covers all of its gas needs by imports from Russia.
Earlier this month, Moldova's government applied for a $300 million (273 million euro) loan from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and intends using part of the proceeds towards purchases of natural gas.
Aurescu also reiterated Romania's support for Moldova's accession to the European Union, as well as of Ukraine and Georgia.
Earlier this month, Moldova applied for membership in the European Union.
