ZIARUL FINANCIAR
- Romania's life insurance market fell by 3.0% on the year in the first half, the daily reported quoting companies' first-half financial results. ING led the market with gross written premiums of 261 million lei, down by some 5.0% on the year.
- Romania’s Oradea Municipality signed a 15 million euro loan with local BRD bank and will use the money to upgrade roads and repair street lightening.
- Romania’s Economy Ministry decided to lay off up to 300 employees of state-owned aircraft manufacturer Avioane Craiova by the end of the year, the company said. The aircraft maker had 635 employees at end-2008.

- Excise duties on fuels, which are calculated taking into account the leu's exchange rate on October 1, will rise by some 15% from the year-ago period, which will lead to a 7.0% increase in gasoline prices, the daily reported.

- Romanian businessman Ion Tiriac sees the turnover of Tiriac Holding falling to between 1.0 billion and 1.1 billion euro this year from 1.4 billion euro ($2.05 billion) in 2008, as August car sales dropped to the level recorded in 1999. Tiriac Holding includes Tiriac Auto, Tiriac Imobiliare, Tiriac Leasing, Tiriac Air, and other smaller companies.
- The Romanian unit of Belgium’s InBev will shut down its brewery in Blaj, central Romania, between October 1, 2009 and March 31, 2010 and will lay off 110 employees due to lower demand.
- The shareholders of Romanian oil and gas group Petrom will discuss on October 20 a proposal to change the company's name to OMV Petrom, to include the name of its majority stockholder, Austria’s OMV.
