April 27 (SeeNews) - Orange Romania, a unit of France Telecom's Internet and mobile arm Orange, said on Thursday its revenues rose by an annual 4.6% to 246.2 million euro ($268 million) in the first quarter of 2017, led by mobile services and sales of mobile equipment.
Orange Romania had 10.065 million clients at the end of March, down from 10.38 million at the end of 2016.
Mobile Internet traffic doubled in the first quarter of the year, compared to the year ago period, supported by an increase in smartphone sales, Orange Romania said in its Q1 2017 financial report.
TV services had 342,000 customers at end-March 2017, a 16.4% increase year on year. Fixed broadband services had 112,000 customers at the end of the first quarter, including 99,000 connected with the deployment of fixed-4G and 12,000 with the deployment of fiber.
"The sustained performance of this quarter is based on the directions envisaged in our Essentials2020 strategy. The growth vectors we focused on during these first three months were the network, the development of fixed services and the entry into the financial services area," Orange Romania CEO, Liudmila Climoc, said.
Since the launch of Orange Money mobile service in November 2016, some 41,000 people have used their smartphones to make payments.
Orange Romania revenues increased by 4.2% last year relative to 2015, reaching 986.8 million euro due to strong performance in mobile services.
Romania’s market of just over 20 million is served by five mobile operators - Orange Romania; Telekom Romania, former Cosmote Romania; RCS&RDS; Vodafone Romania; and insolvent 2K Telecom.
At group level, Orange posted a gross profit of 2.59 billion euro in the firat quarter of 2017, up 2% on the year, as revenues rose 0.8% to 10.07 billion euro.
