August 25 (SeeNews) - The Romanian unit of France’s telecommunications company Orange, said on Friday that Orange Group Romania has signed a six-year virtual power purchase agreement (vPPA) contract with the local arm of French electric utility company Engie to cover 30 GWh of its annual electricity consumption.
Under the deal, whose price was not disclosed, Engie Romania will provide the local telecommunications group with solar power, Orange Romania said in a press release.

The vPPA contract centred around renewable energy sources follows Orange’s commitment to reach carbon neutrality by 2040. Through the deal, Romania joins Orange’s Europe7 perimeter, where in 2023 it has secured a green energy share of 80% in its consumption.
vPPA’s are long-term contracts signed between a renewable energy developer and an interested buyer. This approach covers future trading risks related to price fluctuations in the energy market and guarantees that the energy allocated to the buyer comes from renewable sources.
In 2022, Orange Romania launched a four-year programme to install solar panels on 300 network sites and four interconnection and data centres. So far, three interconnection centres in the cities of Constanta, Brasov and Timisoara boast 650 solar panels and 133 network sites already feature operational panels.
Orange Romania also reduced its energy consumption by approximately 4 GWh last year, after implementing technology updates aimed at boosting energy efficiency.
The Orange Romania Group companies that are part of the deal include Orange Romania, Orange Romania Communications and NextGen Communications.
