November 3 (SeeNews) - North Macedonia's prime minister Dimitar Kovacevski said he will seek to terminate the 600 million euro ($637.4 million) project for the construction of the Kicevo-Ohrid motorway due to multiple delays attributed to the contractor, China's Sinohydro Corporation.
Kovacevski will propose to the government the potential termination of the agreement with Sinohydro and exploring alternative contractors as one of the options, Kovacevski told a press conference on Thursday, which was streamed on the official YouTube channel of the Road Infrastructure Conference in Ohrid.
"I believe it is unacceptable for a 40-kilometre highway to be under construction for over ten years without completion, while simultaneously requesting further extensions to be presented to the members of parliament," Kovacevski stated.
Sinohydro started the construction of the Kicevo-Ohrid motorway in 2014. The project was initially budgeted at 375 million euro, but due to multiple delays, the cost has escalated to over 600 million euro.
The latest deadline for completion is set for the end of 2023.
