June 1 (SeeNews) - North Macedonia's president Stevo Pendarovski has accepted the government's proposal to extend the state of emergency introduced over the coronavirus pandemic by a further fortnight until mid-June.
"Having in mind the latest developments and the increasing number of infected and deceased people, today I will make a decision to declare a new 14-day state of emergency that will begin tomorrow," Pendarovski told a news conference streamed on the YouTube channel of the president's office on Saturday.
North Macedonia's government last week proposed to extend the state of emergency by a further 14 days following a similar extension which expired on Saturday.
North Macedonia has been in a state of emergency introduced to limit the spread of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) since March 18.
As of Sunday, the country has confirmed 2,226 coronavirus cases and 133 deaths, health ministry data shows. Coronavirus infections have been rising in North Macedonia as the government started relaxing lockdown rules in the past weeks.
