October 13 (SeeNews) - The number of tourists staying in Macedonia increased by 4.1% on the year to 617,150 on the first eight months of 2016, the country's statistics office said on Thursday.
The number of overnights spent by tourists in January-August rose by 1.8% year-on-year to 1.93 million.
Domestic tourists numbered 266,119, up 3.5% on the year, whereas international visitors increased by 4.5% to 351,031.
In August alone, the number of tourists visiting Macedonia fell 7.2% to 156,763, while overnights dropped by 3.9% to 694,641.
The number of domestic tourists fell by 4.5% to 92,025 in August, whereas foreign tourists visiting Macedonia totalled 61,738, down 10.9%.
Out of the total number of foreign tourists in August, 17.8% came from Turkey, Serbia followed with an 11% share, and the Netherlands with 9.2%.
