September 18 (SeeNews) - Macedonia's economy posted a nominal contraction of 1.4% year-on-year in the second quarter of 2009, compared to a 6.7% growth a year earlier, preliminary data of the country's Statistics Office showed on Friday.
Macedonia's gross domestic product (GDP) totalled 100.503 billion denars ($2.4 billion/1.6 billion euro) in the second quarter, the statistics office said in a statement.
The sectors of Mining and quarrying, Manufacturing, as well as Electricity, gas and water supply posted an aggregate annual decrease of 13.6%.
In the second quarter, the following sectors posted the biggest growth: Construction (+10.8%) and Public administration, defense and social security, Education, Health and social works (+4.1%), the statement said.
Macedonia's economy contracted by a nominal 0.9% in the first quarter of 2009, compared to a 5.6% growth a year earlier, the Statistics Office said earlier.
