November 10 (SeeNews) - Italian infrastructure construction company INC has started the implementation of a project for the rehabilitation of Albania’s Tirana-Durres railway line and construction of a new rail link to Tirana's international airport, Albania’s prime minister Edi Rama said.
The works have started with the removal of the old rails of the Tirana-Durres railway line, Rama said in a post on Facebook on Tuesday.
Albania's government signed a 70 million euro ($81 million) contract for the project with INC in February, local media reported.
The project is expected be completed in the summer of 2023, online news portal Exit quoted infrastructure minister Belinda Balluku as saying at the time.
The Tirana-Durres railway line has a length of some 35 kilometres, whereas the new rail link to Tirana's airport will be 5.7 kilometres in length. INC was selected for the project in October following a government tender.
The project is co-financed by the European Union, which is providing 36.65 million euro towards its cost, according to the media report.
